Carroll EMC is preparing for the winter storm forecasted to impact the area this weekend. Local weather reports indicate a strong potential for significant ice accumulation.
While the exact timing and impact remain uncertain, frozen precipitation is expected to move into West Georgia on Saturday and exit the area by Sunday. If current forecasts hold, extended power outages are possible due to ice weighing down trees and power lines, as well as hazardous road conditions that could delay travel and restoration efforts.
Even a quarter‑inch of ice can damage electrical equipment. The added weight may cause power lines to sag—even as temperatures rise—resulting in outages. Tree branches can become up to 30 times heavier when coated in ice, increasing the risk of falling limbs.
Carroll EMC has activated its emergency response plan in anticipation of the storm. All personnel have been placed on standby, and crews are securing additional assistance and supplies. The cooperative also encourages Members to take steps to prepare:
- Assemble an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, non‑perishable food, water, and medications.
- Make contingency plans for anyone with medical needs that require electric power or secure a backup power source.
- Ensure you have plenty of blankets or an alternative heat source. If using a generator, follow all manufacturer safety guidelines.
- Check and replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Fully charge mobile devices and power banks.
- Fill your vehicle with fuel.
Members can download Carroll EMC’s free Outage Pal app to easily report outages, view the outage map, and receive real‑time updates on restoration progress. Always stay clear of downed power lines, which may still be energized. For additional preparedness information, visit carrollemc.com/stormcenter.
Throughout the storm, Carroll EMC will communicate with Members and the community through social media, local radio, the cooperative’s website and other channels.
